'Entangled Landscape' is a mixed reality experience created by Studio Above & Below. It features abstract virtual representations of the sorts of mutualistic behaviours that can exist between collaborating organisms in the natural world. Within the artwork, machine learning agents drive the behaviours of fungi and root structures, allowing them to interact with each other. Additionally, the behaviours and interactions are influenced by environmental factors including Soil, Sun and Rain, which are supplied by live data feeds.

Contribution

My role on this project was to develop a Unity ML Agent environment in which two autonomous agents could interact, with each having the ability to change their appearance or movement to represent their current state. Whilst interactions between agents had the ability to change their behaviour, so too did environmental conditions, with data being taken from live feeds which relayed various properties of the current Soil, Sun and Rain conditions. These properties were used as modifiers to the behaviour of each agent, having either a beneficial or detrimental impact on the ability of the agents to interact with one another.
